Random team generator
Add names one by one, or paste a list.
Paste a list of names, say how many teams you want, and the random team generator deals everyone out. As a team randomizer it is meant for the usual problem: eleven people turn up for a pickup football game and nobody wants to pick sides. As a random team picker it works the same for a class, a quiz night or a five-a-side. The tool is free and the names stay in your browser.
How the random team generator splits your names
Your list is shuffled with the random number generator built into your browser, the one used for encryption. Then players are dealt one by one to each team, like cards.
So team sizes never differ by more than one. Eleven players in two teams gives six and five. Seven players in three teams gives three, two and two.
Everything happens on your phone. The names are not sent anywhere. The last list is kept in your browser so it is there next time.
Random groups for pickup football, class and game night
For football, paste the names, set two teams and tap once. Eleven players give six and five. If one side looks stacked, shuffle again. Nobody can say you picked.
The same list works as a random group generator for a class project, a quiz night or a team-building afternoon. Set the number of groups and the names are dealt out evenly.
Common questions
Is the draw really random?
Yes. It is a Fisher-Yates shuffle fed by your browser's secure random numbers. Nobody picks, and the order you typed the names in does not matter.
What if the players do not split evenly?
Some teams get one more player than others. With 7 players and 3 teams you get 3, 2 and 2. The extra spots go to random teams, not always the first.
Can I balance the teams by skill?
Not in this tool. It only shuffles. If the split looks lopsided, tap Shuffle again until nobody complains.
Are my players' names saved?
Only in your own browser, so the list is still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I use it as a random group generator for a class?
Yes. Paste the student names, set the number of groups (up to 8) and tap Make teams. Group sizes never differ by more than one.
Is there a random team generator app to install?
No. It runs in this page, on your phone or your computer, and there is nothing to download or sign up for.
